Breyer attended Stanford University before going on to Oxford as a Marshall Scholar and graduating from Harvard Law School in 1964.
After clerking for Associate Justice Arthur Goldberg in 1964–65, Breyer worked as a law professor and speaker at Harvard Law School from 1967 until 1980. He specialized in administrative law and wrote textbooks that are still in use today.
Before being nominated to the Supreme Court, he worked as a special assistant to the United States Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust and as an assistant special prosecutor on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force in 1973.
