Marcus Reynolds The Oscar-nominated film editor John Refoua, who worked on both “Avatar” and “Avatar: The Way of Water,” passed away on Sunday as a result of liver cancer complications. He was 58.
With the triumph of 2009’s “Avatar,” Refoua’s career as an editor soared to new heights. The group, which included James Cameron and Stephen E. Rivkin, received an Oscar nomination in 2010 for greatest achievement in film editing.

Refoua won the best editing Critics’ Choice Award in 2010 for “Avatar.” He belonged to the American Cinema Editors association as well.

The only people left behind by Refoua are his wife Serena and their granddaughter Avery Sophia.
Refoua received a cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis in the spring of 2022, a rare type of bile duct cancer.
Even in the last few weeks of his life, he continued to work on editing director James Cameron’s third “Avatar” film, according to his wife Serena Refoua. The movie is scheduled to come out at the end of 2024.
