Ministry and Education Dr. Carlton Allen’s Journey
Dr. Allen’s career began in 1977, when he graduated from Furman University with a BA in English. His search for spiritual knowledge led him to Southern Seminary, where he earned a Master of Divinity in 1980. Throughout his distinguished career, he served as Minister of Youth at Greenwood’s First Baptist Church while pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree. His insightful lectures have appeared in prestigious journals such as Baptists Today and Next Sunday. He also wrote “Stories of Falling Toward Grace,” a collection of short stories, and contributed to “Walk with Me,” a book commemorating the life of late Furman chaplain Jim Pitts.
A Life of Devotion and Service
Dr. Allen’s ministry had an impact on many areas. He pastored Beech Grove Baptist Church in Owenton, KY (1980-1981), First Baptist Church in Greenwood, SC (1981-1994), and First Baptist Church in Claxton, GA (1994-2004). His latest pastoral position was at First Baptist Church of Commerce, GA, where he served from 2004 till 2021. From February to July 2023, he continued to serve as an interim preacher at First Baptist Church in Greenwood, SC.

Remembering Dr. Carlton Allen Jr.: A Passionate Man
Aside from his ministry, Dr. Allen was a passionate fan of Furman University and a baseball and golf lover. He relished the opportunity to play at the world-famous Augusta National Golf Club. Above all, his devotion for his family was unrivaled. His family included his wife, Donna Logan Allen, three children, Carl (Taylor) Allen, Elizabeth Allen, and Vicki (Adam) Anderson, as well as three adored grandsons, Colton Ledbetter, Ellison Anderson, and Cooper Allen.
Funeral Services and Charitable Contributions
Dr. Allen’s life and legacy will be honored at a funeral service at the First Baptist Church of Commerce on Monday, July 31, 2023, officiated by Reverend Lanny Reich. Friends and well-wishers are welcome to pay their respects from 4 PM to 7 PM on Sunday at Ivie Funeral Home.
