Daikwan Jedarren Deese Dies in east Charlotte shooting
Sarah Parker A teenager was killed and another student was injured in an east Charlotte shooting on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. along Audrey Street near Eastway Drive.
The victim, identified as 17-year-old Daikwan Jedarren Deese, died at the scene. The second person was taken to a local hospital with injuries considered non-life-threatening. Both were students at Garinger High School.
Nicolio Mobley, the mother of the victim, said her grandson, Deontre Wilson Jr., was injured during the shooting and is undergoing surgery. She was told that her grandson was walking home after school when a black car drove up and people wearing masks started shooting. She also shared that her grandson was hit in the back of his leg and is undergoing surgery. He is expected to survive.

Principal Pratt sent a message to families of Garinger students following the shooting, expressing their grief and support. The Crisis Response Team at Garinger HS has made plans to respond to the emotional needs of all students, with counselors available to assist with grief counseling. The school is asking families to inform their teachers or counselors if there is any additional information the school should be aware of so they can provide the support their student needs.
CMPD Maj. Torri Tellis addressed the ongoing issue of gun violence among youth in the community, emphasizing the importance of keeping firearms secure and not sitting them in cars. Police are working to find suspects and other people involved in the investigation and are encouraging anyone who saw the incident to speak with investigators.
