In the 2015 season, he was named a 2015 National Player of the Year Candidate, was chosen First Team Preseason All-SEC by the media and was selected to two Preseason All-American teams. He was the fourth player in FBS history to pass for 60 touchdowns and rush for 40 touchdowns in a career, he joined Dan LeFevour of Tim Tebow of Florida, Central Michigan, and Colin Kaepernick of Nevada. He finished fourth in total touchdowns and third in SEC history in total yards. He holds 38 school records.

In the 2016 season, Rookie year, he was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year at the end of the season, receiving 28 of 50 votes, beating out running back and teammate Ezekiel Elliott by 7 votes. His peers ranked him 14th on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2017. In 2017 season, he finished his second professional season with 3,324 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns, 357 rushing yards, 13 interceptions, and six rushing touchdowns.
