The TikTok rumor mill is churning yet again. Lately, there has been a lot of press surrounding the weight loss of certain celebrities, and for some reason, it always seems to grab headlines when celebrities are able to lose a lot of weight fast. However, some users on TikTok are claiming that many celebrities are achieving their weight loss seemingly overnight, through the use of a drug known as Ozempic. One of these celebrities who has supposedly lost weight with the drug is Mindy Kaling.

The Velma voice actor and executive producer has gone through some drastic changes over the past few months. Back in December last year, she posted photos of herself in a white strapless dress to her Instagram, showing off her new physique. Whilst it’s a great achievement that she’s acquired a body she’s comfortable with, some were skeptical as to how exactly she was able to lose weight so fast. TikTok have further speculated that Kaling, among other celebrities, has been using the drug Ozempic to aid her weight loss. But what exactly is Ozempic?

Ozempic is a drug prescribed to patients to help in dealing with type 2 diabetes. The drug helps to control sugar levels by helping the pancreas produce more insulin, preventing the liver from producing too much sugar and slowing down the digestion of food. All information on the drug can be found on the Ozempic website. Obviously, this medication is vital for those suffering from diabetes, however, a side effect is that it also causes the patient to lose weight and some celebrities have been using this to get into shape.

Theories of the drug’s use first started appearing online when Kim Kardashian admitted that she lost 16lbs in three weeks in order to fit into the Marilyn Monroe dress at the Met Gala in May last year. Some speculated that Kim had used the drug to change her metabolism and lose the weight she needed. Now, Mindy Kaling is also being accused of using Ozempic due to her dramatic change in weight. Some rumors even state that she has been holding Ozempic injection parties. Although where this rumor originates is unclear.

This has become a massive issue for those with diabetes as the drug is no longer available to those who desperately need it. With waiting lists that go until March for the drug, this could be putting lives at risk. The whole situation is borderline dystopian as the people who need the drug to live are being made to wait for celebrities who can afford to buy the drug outright to lose weight. Diet culture has hijacked a drug that has life-saving potential and turned it into a weight loss pill. Ozempic is now even being advertised as a weight loss drug rather than a diabetes treatment online.

It is worth bearing in mind that, so far, there is nothing to back up these claims of celebrities using Ozempic to lose weight. These are just rumors after all. We will likely never find out if Mindy Kaling has used Ozempic to lose weight, but that hasn’t stopped people from compiling potential evidence and connecting the dots. However, from what we’ve seen, there’s nothing concrete yet, just speculation.
