John Peck Olivia Margaret Benson is a fictional character on the NBC police procedural drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, portrayed by Mariska Hargitay. Benson holds the rank and pay-grade of Captain and is the Commanding Officer of the Manhattan Special Victims Unit of the New York City Police Department, which operates out of the 16th Precinct.
Following the events of “Manhattan Transfer”, Benson is relieved of her duties as Commanding Officer of SVU, largely due to her (personal) involvement with now-Captain Tucker, who becomes a person of interest in a complex corruption case SVU stumbled upon. Why is Benson hopping between SVU and organized crime?
Since that first return, Benson has been hopping between SVU and Organized Crime to assist her old partner and also to be a part of his life again.
Mariska’s told the show’s current showrunner, Michael Chernuchin, that if he keeps up the quality writing, she would stay on for 25 years. NBC is equally committed to Olivia and the show, saying that they want to continue to have SVU on air as long as Mariska stays on.
Benson tells him, “You were the most, single-most important person in my life, and you just disappeared.” Stabler ‘s excuse for not telling her that he was leaving and then never contacting her? “I was afraid if I heard your voice, I wouldn’t have been able to leave.”

In the Season 22 episode “Return of the Prodigal Son”, Benson and Stabler see each other again for the first time in 10 years when Stabler’s wife Kathy ( Isabel Gillies) is severely injured in a car bombing apparently meant for Stabler.
Dodds suffers a stroke after surgery and dies. Benson blames herself for Dodds’ death because she did not initially search Munson for a weapon.
At the end of the episode, the original suspect is cleared, and Benson apologizes to him, admitting that she was a victim of sexual assault. In the season 11 episode “Perverted,” Benson becomes the prime suspect in the sexual mutilation and murder of a biker gang member.
In season 18, Tucker tries to convince Benson to retire with him, though at the conclusion of the episode “Next Chapter”, Benson realizes she is not ready to do so, as being a cop is part of who she is.
While there, she held a membership in a sorority. In addition to English, Benson speaks Italian, Russian, some Spanish and French, and is able to read the Miranda warnings in at least two other languages.

As of Season 22, Benson has never been shot in the line of duty. She has, however, been stabbed off-duty in Season 9 while investigating a case and has been assaulted several times, as well as been stalked, kidnapped, and nearly raped and murdered while undercover.
