Cale Douglas Makar is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who plays for the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League.

He was selected by the Avalanche with the fourth overall choice in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Makar won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022 and was voted the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the most valuable player in the 2021-2022 playoffs.

Meet Cale Makar Parents

Makar is the son of Gary Makar and Laura MacGregor. His father is of Ukrainian origin.

Growing up, he was a fan of the Calgary Flames. Makar, a Calgary native, began his minor-hockey career with the Crowchild Blackhawks before joining the NWCAA Bruins at the Bantam level in 2011.

He also played bantam with the Calgary Flames before transferring to minor midget with the NWCAA Stampeders.

Makar was picked in the eighth round, 164th overall, of the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft by the Western Hockey League’s Medicine Hat Tigers.
