Prayers for Donny Tillery’s loved ones on your loss. One of Ione’s own has died, and Amador County has lost a resident. We are at a loss for words to describe the magnitude of our grief and sorrow at this time. Donny passed away the day after his beloved Dallas Cowboys routed the Minnesota Vikings. Donny worked hard, played hard, and loved life, family, and friends to the fullest; he was poised to have a long, full life after retiring from the police force after 30 years.
Everyone adored his quick wit, huge grin, and generous spirit. My daughter Jessica called to tell me that she had just seen him on Friday, and that he had made her feel “so at home, like a part of the family.” Her brother Louis echoed her sentiments. That’s just how Donny was, though. Donny had a wonderful disposition and never met a stranger. My ex-girlfriend just called to say how kind Donny was to her.
Donny was the kind of person you wanted to spend time with because he brightened everyone’s day. ready for any kind of challenge. Donny spent a large portion of his life riding motorcycles, and he was a world-class dirt bike racer who won multiple medals at the Police and Fire Games. His backyard features a big dirt track. We’ve taken trips to Mexico and all across the United States to go riding with our loved ones. Donny was the best rider everyone had ever seen, whether it was dirt bikes or street bikes. The tragic end to his life was ironically brought about by his use of a motorcycle.
No parent should have to go through the heartbreak of losing a child, and no son was ever loved more by his parents than Donny. They were quite close because of their proximity and constant communication. Incredible, lifelong friendships existed between Donny’s aunt Loreta and uncle Mike, and likewise between Loreta and uncle Donny. And we could all agree that they had good reason to be proud of Donny.
Whenever Mike and I were able to spend time together, we would have in-depth conversations about everything from our careers to our families. Even though I remember his being concerned about Donny while he was on those long rides in Mexico, the thing that sticks out most in my mind is how proud he was of Donny. I also recall hearing how much Donny loved his three children and was a fantastic parent.
Donny, in his later years, was given the gift of the most beautiful baby girl. Olyvia was devoted to her father and thought of him as god. She lost her father, and it was the worst thing that could have happened.
I’d like to think I sparked Donny’s spirit of exploration. When he was 11 or 12, my sister Renee and I took him on a trip to New Orleans in my old van, and we had a blast.
The holidays, hell, life itself, won’t be the same without Donny, but he won’t be forgotten, and the legacy he left will endure forever in the hearts of those he touched. His legacy will continue on through his descendants and great-grandchildren, who will never meet him in person but will always feel the impact of his greatness. May you rest in peace, cousin and friend.
Donny will be the seventh member of the Tillery, Randall, Tillery, or Bishop families to pass away as the sixth generation continues to mature in Ione and Amador County, California. He will join Grandma and Pop Tillery, Mom and Dad Randall, Uncle Ronnie Tillery, and Aunt Diane Bishop.
