On March 1, 2022, Dr. W. Hardy Hendren III, a “legend in the pantheon” of pediatric surgeons, passed away at the age of 96.

Dr. Hendren, Boston Children’s Hospital’s Chief Emeritus of Surgery He died Tuesday at his Duxbury home after leading the team that performed Boston’s first surgery to split conjoined twins in 1969.

William Hardy Hendren III was the second of three children born in New Orleans on February 7, 1926.

Margaret McLeod Hendren, his mother, was a musician.

When the family moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1933, his father, William Hardy Hendren Jr., had worked in film advertising in New Orleans and owned a film firm.
