Like other members of the family, young Barrymore couldn’t resist the temptation of the stage and soon made her foray as a stage actress during the New York City season of 1894. What gave Barrymore an edge over other artists of her generation was her youthful stage presence, energetic disposition and witty nature. Her distinctive style and brilliant voice quality helped her earn the title of the ‘First Lady’ of American theatre.
