While missing only his third cut as a professional at Torrey Pines in January 2012, Phil Mickelson had something else on his mind.

Sophia spent the day in a Children’s Hospital in San Diego and returned on Thursday for a battery of tests while her father struggled to a 5-over-par 77 on the South Course during the Farmers Insurance Open’s first round.

Phil Mickelson bounced back on the North Course with a 4-under 68, but it wasn’t enough to protect him from missing the cut for the first time since 2002.

Mickelson, who finished solo second last year, posted 1-over 145 in the first two rounds, three shots outside the cut line.

In recent years, the Mickelsons have had their share of health challenges. Amy is still battling breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in May 2009.

Phil’s mother, Mary Mickelson, was diagnosed with breast cancer two months later.
