Ser Davos Seaworth (AKA the Onion Knight) is arguably one of the unsung heroes populating HBO’s Game of Thrones, and if there’s anyone who deserves a happy end in season 8, it’s Liam Cunningham’s former smuggler.

But the blood-drenched fields of Westeros are not known for their happy endings, so the chances of Marya Seaworth appearing in Thrones‘ eighth and final season are slim to none. That’s something Cunningham acknowledged during a recent interview with TV Guide, where the actor pointed to the truncated episode count as the primary reason why Mrs. Seaworth is unlikely to feature.

Said he:

I don’t think it’s going to happen. We’ve got six episodes left and we’re ramping up to World War III in Westeros. The introduction of my fabulously beautiful wife, I’d imagine, is not going to be seen.

You can’t fault Cunningham’s logic. This is, after all, Game of Thrones‘ last hurrah, so we can’t imagine season 8 will devote much time to the show’s tertiary characters. That’s something we saw take into effect earlier this year, when the likes of Missandei and Olenna Tyrell were ostensibly reduced to bit parts as showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss cranked up the stakes.

And considering that season 8 will stretch for only six episodes in total, we imagine HBO will spend more time tying up loose ends than introducing never-before-seen characters. By that logic, the only hope for Marya Seaworth would be some form of epilogue scene that involves Davos returning home.

Game of Thrones season 8 is now filming across parts of Ireland ahead of its tentative 2019 release date. And though it’ll bring the curtain down on Daenerys Targaryen, Cersei Lannister, Jon Snow Aegon Targaryen and the rest of the crew, HBO is already beginning to draw up a blueprint for a Thrones successor series.
