Gerald A. “Jerry” Lauer Sr Death and Obituary
Sophia Carter Gerald A. “Jerry” Lauer Sr., 80, a well-known resident of Petrolia and a renowned former fire chief and ambulance commander, passed away peacefully at home on September 29, 2022, with his devoted family at his side.
On June 14, 1942, Gerald was born in Lucinda, Clarion County. He was the late William J. Lauer Sr. and Ruth E. Schill Lauer’s son. Jerry, a 1958 A-C Valley School District alumnus who served in the US Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, was also a veteran. He was a devout Catholic and a longtime attendee of Parker’s former St. Mary Roman Catholic Church. Jerry spent nearly 40 years working at Sonneborn in Petrolia before retiring in 2002.one of the owners of the “original” hydro plants. He had worked for Butler’s Pullman Standard in his younger years. Jerry had a long and illustrious career in EMS and firefighting. He had served the Petrolia Volunteer Fire Department as chief, ambulance commander, president, and chairman of the board of directors. He was a life member of the organization. Additionally, Jerry was a devoted volunteer firefighter for Parker City. He was one of the original EMTs in Butler County and practiced for more than 35 years. He was a founding member of the Rural Firefighters Association, which he led for a time, and he worked as a Pennsylvania State Forest Fire Warden for 50 years. The prestigious American Red Cross Life Saving Award was given to Jerry. He had been a member of the Petrolia council for a long time and had presided over the council. He was a social member of the Parker, Colorado, VFW Post 7073. He delighted in participating in local bands to perform country western music while hunting, fishing, camping, and gambling. Jerry and his wife took pleasure in vacationing and wintering in Florida.Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home of Karns City, 128 Main Street, Karns City from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, and from 10-11 a.m. Thursday. Fire department honors led by members of the Petrolia Volunteer Fire Department will be held 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A funeral service will follow from the funeral home at 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Robert Mathias, a retired Presbyterian pastor, officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by members of VFW Post 7073 in Parker. Interment will be in Parker Presbyterian Cemetery.
