GoFundMe; John Van Cleave Passes Away, Viroqua Elementary PE Teacher & Hockey Coach
Sophia Aguilar It has been reported that Viroqua Elementary PE Teacher John Van Cleave has passed away suddenly.
After the dead news was published many online users shared their sadness on their timelines.
A true blessing to partner with John, teaching Physical Education together and coaching hockey together in Viroqua, WI. We were first friends at UW-Superior, played some hockey together, and I was eager to recruit him when we had PE and hockey coaching openings. John was a true friend and an amazing work partner on the rink and in the gym. Gone at 56 years old. It sucks! When I left Viroqua in 1999, I was so confident that both HS hockey and elementary physical education were in great hands. He was there 3X as long as I was and left a deep legacy! This is the third compadre I have lost in the last year, all of who left an amazing legacy in this world. On to the next, John Van Cleave! We will miss your smile and every positive energy!

The lights were a little darker at Viroqua Elementary School today as we lost our Phy Ed teacher, John Van Cleave to pancreatic cancer. I am fortunate to have worked with him if only for a brief time. The world is a better place because of JVC, and the lights will shine again because of him.
A GoFundMe has been created to help generates funds for the family
Hi, I’m Tia’s co-teacher and close friend, reaching out to all those who love and support Tia and John Van Cleave.
I am going to give you a very short version of John and Tia’s journey, please know this skips over many tests, scans, emergency visits, emotions, side effects, tears, laughter, pain, etc.
John was diagnosed in April 2022 with pancreatic cancer. In June 2022, John started his first round of chemotherapy, followed by seven more rounds. In November 2022, John and Tia met with doctors at Mayo Clinic in Rochester to find out that the current chemotherapy was not working, so they started a new plan. Currently, John is in a clinical trial with the wonderful care team at Mayo in Rochester to try to fight this cancer.
As you can imagine, this has been a difficult time for both Tia and John. They are dedicated to keep fighting this battle, however, they could use your support to help cover daily, medical, and travel expenses. If at this time you are unable to help support them financially, they would love your continued prayers, words of encouragement, positive thoughts, and love you have shown them throughout this journey.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the deceased’s family and friends, who have been struggling with the loss of such an intelligent and compassionate individual.
