Goldie Hawn Reveals Why She Changed Kate Hudson’s Name On The Way To The Hospital
Dylan Hughes Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson recently opened up about their close relationship – which has gotten stronger since Hudson became a mom herself – and the 74-year-old Overboard star revealed that she changed her daughter’s name on the way to the hospital when she was in labor.
In a new interview with People magazine, Hawn told the story about her trip to the hospital to give birth to Hudson in 1979. The actress says that she knew before her daughter was born that she was going to be a strong woman.
“She kicked me so hard in my vagina that I changed her name right on the spot because she was tough,” said Hawn. “I had named her Rebecca and on the 405 [freeway] I went, ‘This is a Kate.’”
Now, Hudson is the mother of three – sons Ryder, 16, and Bing, 8, from previous relationships, and her 18-month-old daughter Rani Rose, who she shares with her partner, musician Danny Fujikawa.
During the interview, Hudson noted that giving birth to Bing was “really amazing” because it was the first time anyone in the family had a natural birth. Turning to her mom, Hudson said: “And you got to be there.”
Hawn said that she was “so happy” her daughter invited her into the room to be a part of Bing’s birth, but everyone in the family thought he was going to be a girl.
“I watched him be born and I saw a penis. And then I wrapped him in the pink blanket that I knitted while I was waiting for him,” recalled Hawn.
When she found out that she was pregnant for a third time, Hudson says that she had to know the baby’s gender because she wanted to be prepared. The How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days star says that she thought for sure she was going to be a “boy mom.”
When she and Fujikawa did their gender reveal and found out they were having a girl, Hudson couldn’t believe it. She says she was “so shocked and excited.”

Goldie Hawn was also by Kate Hudson’s side when she delivered Rani Rose in October 2018, and she admitted that she was probably “a little bit close.” However, Hudson disagreed, saying that every part of Rani’s birth was “just so beautiful.”
