A high school football player in New Jersey died Wednesday after suffering an apparent traumatic brain injury.

Linden High School sophomore Xavier McClain died two weeks after sustaining a head injury during a varsity game against Woodbridge (N.J.) on Sept. 9, Linden (N.J.) Mayor Derek Armstead said in a Facebook post.

“Together we prayed for a miracle and hoped for a different outcome,” Armstead wrote Wednesday.

“Children are supposed to outlive their parents, not the other way around. I asked that you continue to keep the family in your prayers.”

In a social media post Saturday, Armstead rallied his community to pray for McClain, who at the time was fighting for his life.
