Stone was born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, and made his acting debut there in 2000 in a play adaptation of The Wind in the Willows.

She moved to Los Angeles as a teen and made her television debut in the reality series In Search of the New Partridge Family (2004), which only produced an unsold pilot. After playing minor parts on television, she went on to star in a number of popular teen comedies, including Superbad (2007), Zombieland (2009), and Easy A (2012).

Stone received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for the last of these because it was her first main performance.
