There hasn’t been much to choose between Tadej Pogaar and Jonas Vingegaard in the Tour de France 2022 preliminary mountain stages.

The only man who has managed to keep up with the Slovenian’s vicious, late accelerations to the finish line has been the Dane, who has been the yellow jersey’s shadow on the stages 7 and 9 finishes in La Super Planche des Belles Filles.

He is now the closest competitor, finishing second overall and 39 seconds back. Those losses came from the race’s first-time trial, the cobblestones, and Pogaar’s bonus seconds.

Last year, the Dane came in second to Pogaar and appeared to be the only rider capable of stretching the yellow jersey in the mountains.
