Karch Kiraly Early Life & Education

Kiraly was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California. He began playing volleyball at the age of six, encouraged by his father, Laszlo Kiraly, who had previously been a part of the Hungarian Junior National team before fleeing the country during the 1956 Hungarian national revolt. Kiraly competed in his first beach volleyball event at the age of 11 with his father.

Kiraly went to Santa Barbara High School and played on the boys’ varsity volleyball team. His father was instrumental in establishing the school’s boys’ volleyball program. The Dons of Santa Barbara reached the title game twice during Kiraly’s high school career, reaching the finals his sophomore year before falling to San Clemente High School in the championship match in 1976. Kiraly’s high school squad was unbeaten in his senior year, winning CIF SS by defeating Laguna Beach High School in the title game in 1978, and he was named Sectional Player of the Year. Kiraly was asked to join the Junior National Team during his high school years, where he competed for three years. Rick Olmstead, Kiraly’s high school coach, is credited with teaching him the value of hard work and devotion.
