Leona enjoys making rice bowls with a selection of meat and vegetables. "Brown rice contains fiber and protein, both known to have a satiating effect and contributing to a lower glycaemic index (GI) than that of white rice," says registered nutritionist Kerry Torrens. "This means the carbs supplied by a portion of brown rice are converted to energy more steadily. For this reason, opting for brown rice over white helps reduce blood glucose and fasting insulin levels. All of which stabilizes energy levels, prevents cravings and may help with weight management."
Leona loves roller skating with her friends. "Roller skating has many benefits: weight loss, strengthening your muscles, increasing muscular endurance," says personal trainer Becky Bowman. "Not to mention, roller skating releases endorphins, making you feel happy."
Leona is a fan of playing ice hockey. Experts say team sports offer many health benefits. "Team sports are a fun way to get in your exercise for cardiovascular health because you get to do it in a group as opposed to doing it alone, plus it's a great stress reliever, which helps lower your risk for heart disease," says Helga Van Herle, MD, a cardiologist at Keck Medicine of USC and an associate professor of clinical medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.
Leona loves to ride her bike outside. "It's been shown that cycling reduces anxiety and depression," says Jaclyn Kubiak, PT, DPT. "Mainly, because you can make it fun. You get the added benefit of being outdoors or you can go do it with friends. You can change the intensity for it yourself," he adds. "It can be as easy as you want or as hard and enduring as you want."
Leona enjoys swimming both in a pool and in nature. "Seawater contains minerals such as magnesium, sodium, calcium, chloride, and sulfate that have natural benefits for the body," says Abe Malkin, MD. "Magnesium helps moisturize the skin and reduces inflammation. People with skin [issues] like eczema or dryness are recommended to take regular baths in salted solutions or swim in the sea."
