Reddick, who was born in Baltimore on June 7th, 1962, received his Bachelor of Music degree in composition from Rochester. In the 1980s, he uprooted to Boston, where he eventually attended Yale University to get an MFA in 1994. His first notable TV appearance occurred on Season 4 of HBO’s prison drama “Oz” in 2000. Detective Johnny Basil, the undercover cop he portrayed, was an addict who murdered a corrupt police officer by forcing him down an elevator shaft while attempting to shut down the drug trade. After being taken to Oz, Basil gets stabbed to death by Seth Gilliam’s character Clayton Hughes.
HBO kept Reddick around and later cast him as Baltimore police lieutenant Cedric Daniels, one of the leads, on “The Wire” in 2002. He was in command of the narcotics division and slowly progressed through its ranks during the show’s five-season run, butting heads frequently with his superiors. In the series finale, he quit his job as commissioner to become an attorney specializing in criminal defense.
Once “The Wire” finished in 2008, Reddick joined “Fringe” later that year as Phillip Broyles, a special agent for Homeland Security and chief of the Fringe division. The organization investigated instances connected to fringe science, pseudoscience and alternate timelines. In 2014, he was cast as another police commander, but this time on Amazon’s “Bosch” series, which finished in 2021. After receiving two Saturn Award nominations for his work on “Fringe,” he was nominated for his role as deputy chief Irvin Irving.
More recently, Reddick played as Albert Wesker last year on Netflix’s short-lived series “Resident Evil,” an adaptation of the popular zombie video game. He also contributed vocal work on Season 2 of Amazon’s “The Tale of Vox Machina,” which premiered in January. His previous vocal performances included the villain Sylens in the two popular PlayStation games “Horizon: Zero Dawn” and “Horizon: Forbidden West,” which released last year, besides voicing Commander Zavala in the long-running “Destiny” franchise.
The highly anticipated “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series on Disney+, based on the books by Rick Riordan, features Reddick as the Greek god Zeus. His other upcoming roles include those in Danny DeVito’s “St. Sebastian,” Netflix’s Shirley Chisholm biopic “Shirley,” Showtime’s “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial,” and the space drama “Apteros,” all of which will premiere on May 19.
