Lisa Lopes, who was born Lisa Nicole Lopes, was an American hip hop singer, rapper, songwriter, and producer. She is best known as one-third of the R&B girl group TLC, alongside Tionne T-Boz Watkins and Rozonda Chilli Thomas.

Additionally, Lisa was one of the creative forces behind the group apart from rapping and singing background vocals on TLC recordings.

Lisa began playing with a toy keyboard when she was five years old and later composed her own songs. By the time she was 10 years old, she formed the musical trio The Lopes Kids with her siblings, with whom she sang gospel songs at local events and churches.

She was a member of the hip-hop/R&B group TLC. Being known for her brash, uncompromising demeanor, she engineered the group’s brand of empowered womanhood that vaulted the trio to the top of the pop charts.

In 1991, the group formed with Lopes lending her rapping talents to fellow members Tionne T-Boz Watkins and Rozonda Chilli Thomas. Their first album was released the following year and was an immediate success. That album was able to produce three Top 10 hits. The group’s 1994 follow-up, Crazysexycool, sold more than 11 million copies in the United States alone and featured three No. 1 hits: Creep, Red Light Special and Waterfalls. The album also earned the trio two Grammy Awards.

It is a documentary directed by Lauren Lazin which premiered on VH1 and VH1 Soul on May 19, 2007. It runs from March 30, 2002, until her death on April 25, 2002. The documentary entails the life, last days spent in a spiritual retreat in Honduras, and the accidental death of rapper and TLC member Lisa Lopes. Additionally, the documentary features narrative insight and commentary from interviews of the singer.

Lisa Lopes Death

She died on 25 April 2002 in La Ceiba, Honduras while she was driving a rented Mitsubishi Montero SUV. She swerved slightly to avoid a truck (it is not clear if the truck was slow-moving or stationary) then immediately to the right as she tried to avoid an oncoming car.

That vehicle rolled several times after hitting two trees, throwing Lisa and three others out of the windows, and finally coming to rest in a ditch at the side of the road. Lisa died instantly of “fracture of the base of the cranium” and “open cerebral trauma,” and she was the only person fatally injured in the accident.

There was a cameraman in the front passenger seat who was videotaping at the time, so the last seconds leading up to the swerve that resulted in the fatal accident were recorded on video. Victims of the accident were taken to Liverpool Royal Hospital. Her sister Reigndrop Lopes was in the vehicle and survived the collision. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Lisa Lopes Funeral

On 2 May 2002, her funeral was held at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia where thousands of people attended.

Engraved upon her casket were the lyrics to her portion of “Waterfalls”, stating “Dreams are hopeless aspirations, in hopes of coming true, belief in yourself, the rest is up to me and you.” Gospel Duo Mary Mary sang their song “Shackles (Praise You)” at the funeral. She was buried at Hillandale Memorial Gardens in Lithonia.

Lisa Lope Legacy

She was in the process of setting up two educational centers for Honduran children. One was built on an 80-acre plot of land she called Camp YAC. The other center was called Creative Castle.

Just after her death, Lisa’s family started the Lisa Lopes Foundation, a charitable group in 2003 dedicated to providing neglected and abandoned youth with the resources necessary to increase their quality of life. Her spiritual motto was the one used for her foundation: “Energy never dies… it just transforms.”

The foundation went into various underdeveloped villages and gave new clothes to needy children and their families. That foundation hosted a charity auction in August 2007 selling items donated by celebrities. It raised approximately $ 5,000 for the Hogar de Amor (“Home of Love”), an orphanage in Honduras. In 2012, it began hosting an annual music festival, known as “Left Eye Music Fest”, in Decatur, Georgia.

Lisa produced the girl group Blaque, who scored a platinum album and two US top-ten hits. She remains the only member of TLC to have released a solo album.

During the time of her death, Lopes was working on a documentary that was released as The Last Days of Left Eye and aired on VH1 in May 2007. She received more co-writing credits than the other members.

Also, she has designed the outfits and staging for the group and contributed to the group’s image, album titles, artworks, and music videos. Through her work with TLC, she won four Grammy Awards.
