Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova was born to her parents, Valcho Bakalov and Rumyana Bakalova.

Maria Valcheva Bakalova is a Bulgarian actress. She rose to international prominence for her portrayal of Tutar Sagdiyev in the 2020 mockumentary Borat: Subsequent Movie.

She won the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. She was nominated for Academy Awards, BAFTA Film Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Bakalova began singing lessons and playing the flute when she was six. At 12, she began acting, majoring in drama theater and minoring in flute at the National School of Music and Stage Arts in Burgas, where she was a straight student.

Bakalova offered to assist the directing duo with scheduling and other tasks, and she accompanied them to the set of a film they were working on so she could observe and learn.

During her third year at the Academy, one of the directors encouraged her to audition for a small role in their film, The Father. She got the part and acted in a brief flashback scene as a younger version of one of the characters.
