Varney was born in Derby, England, in 1948. He began his career in journalism as a business reporter in the United Kingdom. In 1980, he moved to the United States to join CNN’s business news team. He helped launch CNN’s business news coverage and hosted many of their financial programs, including Your Money, Business Day, and Business Asia.
