Joe Keery was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, to architects David and Nina Keery, an English professor. He is the second of five children, following sisters Caroline, Lizzy, Kate, and Emma.

Keery grew up in Newburyport and attended River Valley Charter School, a Montessori elementary and middle school, as well as Newburyport High School.

When he was younger, he participated in Theater in the Open, a performing arts camp at Maudslay State Park, but he didn’t start acting until high school, initially at the request of his older sister.

The actor went on to study at DePaul University’s The Theatre School, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting in 2014.
