She was born on May 7, 1993, in Zagreb in Croatia to a Croatian father, r Ratko Tomljanović, and a Bosnian mother, Emina.

Sports runs in her family because her older sister Hana played tennis for the University of Virginia. In addition, her father also played handball professionally and went as far as winning the 1992 and 1993 handball European Cup.

Tomljanovic began playing tennis at the age of six and moved to Florida for training when she was 13.
