As a child, Michelle Monaghan enjoyed taking part in all kinds of extracurricular activities, winning blue ribbons as a hog wrestler at the age of thirteen. For her high school education, she entered East Buchanan High School, where she was on the student council and was elected as the class president.
At East Buchanan, she also participated in the speech team and acted in the school's plays. Her coach and theatre director Cheryl Beatty remembered her as "respectful, kind and hardworking, especially when it came to the arts".
Michelle began modeling while still in her high school, intending to save money for her college education, spending the summer just before her senior year working in Japan. Eventually she graduated from school and entered Iowa State University, studying there for one semester before moving to Chicago.
In Chicago, she enrolled at Columbia College Chicago to study journalism, hoping to make her mark as a newscaster or even an investigative reporter. Concurrently, she continued to model, appearing in catalogues, earning the tuition fees with it.
Disheartened by learning that she would have to start working in small towns before making it big, she left her college in 1999, one semester remaining to complete her journalism degree. Already established as a model, she then moved to New York City, where she entered Circle in the Square Theatre School.

In 2007, she starred as Angie Gennaro in Gone Baby Gone and Miranda in The Heartbreak Kid. They were followed in 2008 by Trucker, Made of Honor, and Eagle Eye; in 2010 by Due Date and Source Code. Debuting as an executive producer with Trucker is another of her achievements of this period.
In 2011, she reprised the role of Julia Meade Hunt in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, a sequel to her earlier film, Mission: Impossible III. Thereafter, she continued to appear in leading roles in array of films like Machine Gun Preacher (2011), Tomorrow You're Gone (2012), Penthouse North (2013) etc.
In 2013, after a gap of ten years, Monaghan returned to the television, giving voice to Gina in the Max Jets episode of American Dad. It was followed in 2014 by the HBO Crime drama series, True Detective, in which she played Maggie Hart, the season’s main female character.
Her next television series, The Path, was launched on March 30, 2016 on the subscription streaming service Hulu, appearing in it as Sarah Lane, the main role, in its thirty-six episodes till March 2018. It was followed in 2020 by Messiah, appearing in its ten episodes as Eva Geller.
All through, she continued to appear on big screen, starring in five drama films, i.e. Fort Bliss, Better Living Through Chemistry, Justice League: War, Playing It Cool and The Best of Me, in 2014.
