Morales uses weights and resistance training for amazing muscle tone and strength. "We're very familiar with the benefits of aerobic exercise like running, cycling or walking, but we haven't focused on lifting and strength exercise. They're seen on either ends of the spectrum – one makes you strong and muscular and one helps you live longer but that's not true. The reality is the two, in terms of health benefits, overlap more than they differ," says Dr. Stuart Phillips, a McMaster University professor in kinesiology and Canada Research Chair in skeletal muscle health.
Morales loves traditional exercise moves such as push ups. "Push-ups will improve your health by building muscle, raising your metabolism to burn fat, and providing a cardiovascular benefit," says Robert S. Herbst, a personal trainer and former world champion powerlifter. "They enable you to get a full body workout with no equipment."
Morales loves to sprint, and makes sure cardio is a part of every workout. "I think people have a love-hate relationship with running because it can be intimidating to start," says Peloton tread instructor Jess Sims. "And to that I say, just start! Take some pressure off yourself."
Morales uses battle ropes to boost her workouts. Battle ropes are a great way to add some challenge and variety to your exercise. "The key to their effectiveness is that they work each arm independently, eliminating strength imbalances as they sculpt your muscle," says John Brookfield, creator of the original battling-ropes system.
Morales loves incorporating dance-based workouts into her exercise routines. Dance offers health benefits to people at any skill level and any age. "The aging population is at high risk for falls, and we think dance, especially, can be beneficial in reducing the risk of falls, because dance is just a series of balance tests," says Emily Sandow, supervisor of dance physical therapy at NYU Langone's Harkness Center for Dance Injuries.
