Muriel Bowser is the current mayor of Washington, D.C. She was born in D.C. in 1972 and grew up in the city. She graduated from Elizabeth Seton High School in 1990 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in history from Chatham University and a master’s degree in public policy from American University.

Bowser began her political career in 2004 when she was elected to the Advisory Neighborhood Commission in Ward 4. She served on the commission for two years before being elected to the D.C. Council in 2007. She served on the council for eight years, during which time she chaired the Committee on Economic Development.

In 2014, Bowser ran for mayor of D.C. She defeated incumbent Vincent Gray in the Democratic primary and went on to win the general election. She was sworn in as mayor on January 2, 2015.
