Sophia Aguilar Tragic Deaths of Models Nikki Coats and Maleesa Mooney in Downtown LA
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, two families are grappling with the devastating loss of their daughters, both models based in Los Angeles, who were discovered dead in luxury apartments in the city’s downtown area last week.
The victims have been identified as 31-year-old Maleesa Mooney and 32-year-old Nichole, fondly known as Nikki, Coats. Their lifeless bodies were found in separate apartments, only a few miles apart.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is treating Mooney’s death as a murder. However, Coats’ death is not currently classified as a homicide, though her family strongly believes she was murdered.
May Stevens, Coats’ aunt, expressed her shock upon seeing her niece’s lifeless body, stating that the scene suggested foul play. She recounted, “I believe it was murder, I really do. One of her legs was up in the air in a kicking position. That’s not somebody who just laid in their bed and died.”
Coats’ mother, Sharon, described the scene as bloody and gruesome, adding to the family’s distress.
Mooney’s body was discovered two days later, on September 12th, after a concerned call prompted officers to check on her welfare. Details regarding her case remain scant, and the cause of death remains unknown. The LAPD is actively seeking information to identify those responsible for her death.
Regarding the potential connection between the two cases, the police have yet to confirm any links. They emphasized that it is too early to make such determinations and that they are awaiting coroner’s reports.
Lt. Ricard Lopez mentioned that Coats’ death remains under active investigation, and the cause of death may change based on the coroner’s report.
Jourdin Pauline, Mooney’s sister, voiced her family’s concern during a rally seeking justice for her sister. She spoke of their close bond and expressed her shock and pain at her sister’s untimely demise.

Nikki Coats’ father, Guy Coats, revealed that he last spoke to his daughter via FaceTime on September 7th, where she was with friends and family. He described her as a beautiful person and expressed the family’s distress over her loss. He also mentioned their heightened concern after learning about Mooney’s death in close proximity, leading them to consider the possibility of a predator in their midst.
The LAPD continues its investigations into these tragic deaths, as two families grapple with the profound loss of their beloved daughters.
