Nicholas Alexander Folk was born on the 5th of November, 1984 to parents Anthon and Kathryn Folk. Through his father, Nick Folk is of German descent, specifically of Bavarian origins and he has German citizenship.

None of his parents were sportsmen as his father is an accountant while his mother is a paediatrician, but having been born in Hollywood, California, he developed a taste for American football and began playing the sport in high school at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks.

At the high school level, Nick Folk excelled enough at the sport to be named in the All-CIF team and as a result, he was offered a football scholarship by the University of Arizona.

He played his college career at Arizona where he earned accolades like being named in the All-Pac-10, finishing his college career with an admirable record of scoring 30 out of 47 attempted field goals.

His impressive college career took his career further by getting him drafted in the 2007 NFL Draft. A placekicker, Nick Folk was drafted in the sixth round as the 178th pick of the draft by the Dallas Cowboys and proceeded to spend three seasons in the team.

He started out his career in the league in admirable fashion, delivering a performance that earned him a place in the Pro Bowl as the first Cowboys rookie kicker. He continued his strong performances in the second season but failed to maintain his quality in the third season, and was eventually released by the Cowboys.
