According to a criminal complaint submitted on Wednesday in Benton County District Court, a 36-year-old St. Cloud man is accused of fatally shooting a lady in the neck outside of their place of employment after she repeatedly rejected his advances.The killing of Nicole M. Hammond, 28, of St. Cloud resulted in one felony count of second-degree murder being brought against Michael J. Carpenter.The lawsuit claims that just before 7 a.m. on Monday, police were called to a report of a gunshot at a textile company on St. Cloud’s northeast side. Police discovered Hammond with a pool of blood around her head resting in the parking lot close to her vehicle. Her phone and keys were nearby.Police were informed by two witnesses—both textile company workers—that Carpenter was in the parking lot. According to court filings, one witness spotted Carpenter near his automobile, which had the front and rear driver’s side doors ajar. The other witness claimed to have seen Carpenter exit the car, hear a gunshot, and then return to the vehicle before driving away.According to the complaint, investigators discovered numerous texts between Hammond and Carpenter from the previous evening in which she instructed him not to cause any unease at work and stated that she “did not want to be touched by” Carpenter.Police were informed by several workers that Carpenter had approached Hammond several times in the previous month and had been consistently rejected by her. The complaint claims that Carpenter’s “bad temper” was also mentioned by some.A few hours later, Carpenter was taken into custody at a residence in Sauk Rapids. On the back seat of Carpenter’s automobile, investigators discovered a 9-mm pistol with a filled magazine in a case.
