Early Norman Bailey, age 88, passed away on December 27, 2022, at Pleasantview Home in Kalona, IA following a sudden illness.

A funeral service will be held Friday, January 6, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where visitation will be Thursday, January 5, 2023 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Burial with military honors will be at St. Joseph Cemetery followed by a luncheon at The Kirkwood Room.

Norm was born on October 20, 1934, in Peru, IN to Dr. Earl W. Bailey and Mildred Marie (Fish) Bailey.

Norm was a 1952 graduate of Logansport High School in Logansport, IN. He enlisted in the USAF in 1954 and served as a pilot in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) and was honorably discharged in 1958 with the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

Norm then enrolled at Indiana University under the GI Bill and received a BBA, MBA, and DBA from the Indiana University School of Business. Norm and his wife, Vee, lived in Columbus, OH, Bloomington, IN, and Austin, TX before settling in Iowa City, IA in 1966, where he was an Associate Professor of Business at the University of Iowa.

Norm liked teaching at the collegiate level but loved being an entrepreneur even more. He started and owned several businesses in Iowa City including a retail computer store, construction company and a commercial real estate corporation, North Bay, Inc. which is still a going concern.

He was also active in the Noon Rotary Club of Iowa City, IA.
Norm met the love of his life, Vee, at Logansport High School and they were united in marriage on March 2, 1957, in Valparaiso, IN.

They had four children who survive him: V. Michela “Kela” Bailey of St. Louis, MO, Bradford Bailey (Brenda) of Floyd, IA, Laura Sogard (Chris) of Indianapolis, IN, and Amanda “Mandi” Houston (Ryder) of Iowa City, IA; as well as seven grandchildren: Dr. Ryan Bailey (Joy) of Chicago, IL, Eric Bailey (Melanie Slattery) of Chicago, IL, Katherine (Bailey) Ortmayer (Hunter) of Charles City, IA, Abby Sogard and Annabelle Sogard of Indianapolis, IN, Braden Houston and Schuyler Houston of Iowa City, IA; and two great granddaughters: Adaline and Natalie Bailey of Chicago, IL.

He is also survived by his sisters Carolyn Bailey of Bloomington, IN, and Bettsy (Bailey) Hollingsworth of Carmel, IN; his cousin Barbara (Bailey) McNeal of Omaha, Nebraska; and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
