On March 4, 1945, Michael John Sheridan was born to Bernice and John Sheridan in St. Louis, Missouri. Corpus Christi Catholic School and St. Louis University High School both recognized him as a top student. Following this, he enrolled at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, MO.
He decided to study philosophy at Cardinal Glennon College Seminary in St. Louis at the end of his first year of college. He completed his degree in 1967. He enrolled in Kenrick Seminary to study theology and became involved in the school’s dramatics club. On May 29, 1971, Cardinal John Carberry ordained him as a priest.
After being ordained, he went on to earn a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from Rome’s Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. As soon as he got back to St. Louis, he was put to work as a professor at Kenrick Seminary, where he stayed for over ten years. He stayed true to his acting passion by joining the Priestly Players, a troupe made up of fellow clergy members. In 1988, he went back to working in parishes, this time throughout the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
Pope John Paul II appointed him an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of St. Louis in 1997, while he was pastoring Immacolata Parish in Richmond Heights, Missouri. He and the current archbishop of Kansas City, Kansas, Joseph Naumann, were ordained bishops by Archbishop Justin Rigali on September 3, 1997.
Upon his appointment as co-adjutor of the Diocese of Colorado Springs by Pope John Paul II on December 4, 2001, he became the second pope to hold this position. On January 30, 2003, he was ordained and officially installed as the bishop of the diocese.
St. John Henry Newman Chapel and Catholic Student Center at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs were two of his many accomplishments as Bishop of Colorado Springs. His vocations program also led to the ordination of many new priests for the diocese.
St. Dominic Parish in Security, St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Castle Rock, Our Lady of the Woods Parish in Woodland Park, and St. Benedict Parish in Falcon are just a few of the new churches that Bishop Sheridan oversaw during his time as bishop. To teach and to speak, Bishop Sheridan was a natural. Beginning in 2008, he conducted hundreds of interviews on his weekly radio show with guests ranging from cardinals to actors and musicians to discuss various aspects of the Catholic faith. Up until October of 2020, the show continued to air.
Two cousins, Nancy (Tony) Berra and Linda (Kevin) Noland, and two nephews are all that remain of Bishop Sheridan’s family.
