Dylan Hughes Longtime drummer and last surviving original member of Buddy Holly’s backing band The Crickets, Jerry Allison, passed away on Monday at the age of 82.
The death of Allison was announced on Holly’s official Facebook page.
The note read, “Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jerry ‘JI’ Allison, drummer for The Crickets, one of Buddy’s closest friends, and an inspiration to drummers for decades,” upon his passing.
The message continues, “JI was a musician ahead of his time, and his energy, ideas, and exceptional talent contributed to the success of The Crickets and rock ‘n’ roll in general. Buddy is frequently hailed as the first songwriter, but JI also penned and inspired a large number of songs that went on to become classics.

Early in 1957, Holly co-founded The Crickets with Allison, Niki Sullivan on rhythm guitar, and Joe B. Mauldin on bass. Allison is credited with co-composing two of Holly’s most enduring songs, “That’ll Be the Day” and “Peggy Sue,” which reached No. 1 and No. 3 on the Billboard pop singles chart, respectively.
After Buddy Holly’s tragic plane crash death in February 1959, which also claimed the lives of The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, Allison played with a variety of The Crickets lineups for decades.
Allison also co-wrote “More than I Can Say,” which The Crickets recorded after Holly’s death in 1959 and which was later a hit for Bobby Vee in 1961 and Leo Sayer in 1980.
Allison was also in high demand as a session musician, lending his talents to recordings by The Everly Brothers, Vee, Johnny Burnette, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Rivers, Paul McCartney, Waylon Jennings, Nanci Griffith, and a host of others.
As a member of The Crickets, Allison was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Holly was separately inducted in 1986.
