Jerry was not only a journalist, but he was also a professor. As dean of Louisiana State University’s Manship School of Mass Communication, Ceppos established a news service to fill the hole left by decreasing major news sources, employing student journalists to follow state government, and perform investigative projects.

He advised them to look into unsolved homicides committed by Ku Klux Klansmen in the civil rights movement. And 90 news outlets in Louisiana and Mississippi have printed pieces by Manship students, according to Christopher Drew, the service’s director and a former New York Times investigative writer.
