Peter Ostrum, full name Peter Gardner Ostrum is an American veterinarian and former child actor, best known for his role as Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in 1971.

When talent agents chose Ostrum for Willy Wonka, he was 12 years old. He declined to sign a three-film contract after the film was completed, despite enjoying the experience of shooting it. Ostrum became hesitant to discuss his one starring role after eschewing a career in film and theater. In 1990, he began an annual tradition of speaking to schoolchildren about the film, and when Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was released in theaters in 2005, he became a topic of interest once more.

When Ostrum returned from shooting Willy Wonka, he became interested in horses, and the veterinarian who looked after them had a big influence on him. Ostrum graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1984 with a doctorate in veterinary medicine and lived in Lowville, New York with his wife Loretta (née Lepkowski) and two children as of 2005.
