Phylicia Rashad, an American actress, singer, and director who serves as dean of Howard University’s College of Fine Arts, was born on June 19, 1948.

She is best known for playing Clair Huxtable on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show (1984–1992), for which she received nominations for an Emmy Award in 1985 and 1986. On Cosby, she also portrayed Ruth Lucas. At the 2010 NAACP Image Awards, she was referred to as “The Mother of the Black Community.”

On December 11, 1986, their daughter Condola Phylea Rashd was born in New York.
