Polito Vega, who oversaw La Mega 97.9’s Spanish-language music programming for decades, has passed away. He was 84.

His station made the announcement of Vega’s passing on Thursday but left out the official cause.

La Mega 97.9 posted on Instagram on Thursday morning, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Polito Vega. We are thankful for the time we had to spend with him and the legacy he leaves in the radio industry, but we cannot adequately express how much we will miss him.

Known as “El Rey de la Radio,” Vega was the leading figure in Spanish-language radio in New York City for five decades, spending more than 20 years there.

The caption on the Instagram post from Thursday read, “Rest in peace, king.” Alex Sensation is a Colombian artist. We appreciate everything you did for us, and we won’t forget you.

Vega, who was born on August 3rd, 1938 in Puerto Rico, moved to New York City in 1959. By reading the news and working low-paying radio jobs, he practiced his English. In 1960, Vega debuted his “Fiesta Time” program on the now-defunct WEVD.

He explained, “When I first began, you read the commercials live on the radio. There were only two turntables, so you had to use your own voice for everything.

One of the first radio Announcers to play salsa music on the air was Vega, who helped popularize musicians like Machito and Tito Rodriguez.
