Raye is a British singer, songwriter, and musician. She was born in Tooting, London to a Ghanaian-Swiss mother and a Yorkshire-born English father.

However, the names of her parents and what they do is not public knowledge. She sang gospel songs in church as a child, where her father was the musical director and her mother sang in the choir.

She later relocated to Croydon, where she attended Woodcote High School and BRIT School before dropping out after two years due to feeling “confined…despite learning an extensive amount.” She spent the majority of her adolescence learning how to write songs professionally in-studio sessions on weekends.

Raye became well-known after appearing on the commercially successful singles “By Your Side,” “You Don’t Know Me,” “Secrets,” and “Bed.” She left Polydor Records in July 2021 to become an independent artist.

Raye rose to prominence as a solo artist in 2022, when her single “Escapism” topped the UK Singles Chart and became her first song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Her debut studio album, My 21st Century Blues, was released to critical acclaim in February 2023.

Throughout her career, Raye has received critical acclaim and has been recognized with award nominations. She has also been involved in songwriting for other artists, further establishing her presence in the music industry.
