While aggravated robbery charges were dropped, two young men accused of attacking a transgender woman at a Minneapolis light-rail station earlier this year pled guilty to felony assault.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced on Monday that audio from security video proved the assault at the Lake Street light-rail station on February 27 was not motivated by bias, despite the assault being denounced as a possible hate crime. At the time of their arrests, Kevin Dewayne York, 23, and Keaten James Morris, 19, were each charged with first-degree aggravated robbery and third-degree felony assault, but prosecutors had not yet established the circumstances surrounding the crimes.

Mary Moriarty, the Hennepin County Attorney, stated in March that prosecutors were attempting to improve the audio from the video to see,  To change the charges and increase the potential punishments, they would need to show that the attack was motivated by hatred. “Even if we don’t have the facts to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen,” she continued, “doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.”

Moriarty turned down a Monday interview. She claimed in a statement that from the start, her office “would see what the evidence and investigation revealed.”

“Our staff was able to improve the audio from one camera view, and the audio showed there had been a disagreement before to the assault that was not driven by bigotry. The verdicts in the cases lead to felony convictions and hold the defendants responsible for the behavior that actually took place.

Although York had the victim’s handbag with her ID inside, Hennepin County Attorney spokesperson Nick Kimball stated that there was no evidence that he used force expressly to remove her goods.

The victim was identified as Reginald Eugene Snelling, 41, of Minneapolis, by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday night. A 29-year-old male was detained by Metro Transit police and lodged in the Hennepin County prison pending charges.
