Honoring the Legacy of Elizabeth Agnew: A Champion for Dogs and Rescues

In remembrance of Elizabeth Agnew, a compassionate advocate for dogs, whose life was dedicated to their rescue and well-being. Residing in Agnew, within Clallam County, Washington, Elizabeth opened her heart and home to approximately 29 Australian Shepherd-Border Collies, offering them love and sanctuary. Tragically, in May 2023, Elizabeth passed away, leaving her beloved dogs facing a dire situation.

The dogs under Elizabeth’s care were not spayed or neutered and had various health challenges. They also exhibited deep fear of humans, living in unsanitary and unsafe conditions, with some even escaping and wandering the neighborhood. The Clallam County animal control officers and staff endeavored to round up the dogs, but their skittish and elusive nature posed a significant challenge. To rescue these dogs and provide them with a chance at a better life, assistance was required from local animal welfare organizations.

Stepping forward to answer this call were Welfare for Animals Guild (WAG) and Olympic Peninsula Humane Society (OPHS). Over the course of 10 days, they collaborated tirelessly to employ humane methods for trapping the dogs, including the use of food as bait and live traps. Furthermore, they coordinated with fellow rescue organizations like Center Valley Animal Rescue to secure suitable placements for these dogs, ensuring they received the necessary medical care and rehabilitation.

The rescue mission was far from straightforward, given the dogs’ deep trauma and inherent distrust of people. The dogs required patience, compassion, and time to acclimate to their new environments. Some were transferred to other rescue facilities equipped to provide one-on-one care, while others remained under the care of WAG and OPHS. The dedicated staff and volunteers at these organizations worked diligently to socialize the dogs, impart essential skills, and nurture their physical and emotional healing.

Months of unwavering dedication and love ensued, and the dogs made gradual strides towards happier and healthier lives. Some were fortunate enough to find their forever homes with adoptive families who understood their unique needs, showering them with the attention and affection they deserved. Others continue to await their opportunity to find their perfect match.

Although Elizabeth Agnew has departed from this world, her legacy endures through the lives of the dogs she cared for.
