Richard Jay Belzer is an American stand-up comedian, actor and author.

He is best known for his role of Detective John Munch, the character he portrayed in the NBC series ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’, which ran for seven seasons and was succeeded by ‘Homicide:

The Movie’. His character was also incorporated into the crime series ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ that ran for 15 more seasons.

His witty nature proved as an asset and landed him in Channel One’s sketch-comedy group and also led to his on-screen debut in the film ‘The Groove Tube’. A regular at New York City comedy clubs, he eventually became a regular emcee at Catch a Rising Star.

He then landed a role in the off-Broadway production of the National Lampoon stage show. During this period, he also appeared in several TV series and films. He appeared in the HBO comedy special ‘Richard Belzer:

Another Lone Nut’ and in the horror film ‘Species II’. Childhood & Early LifeRichard Belzer was born on August 4, 1944, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Frances and Charles Belzer, a tobacco and candy retailer. In 1985, he hosted the late night television show ‘Hot Properties’. In 1986, he did two films—‘America’ and ‘Charlie Barnett’s Terms of Enrollment’. He was featured in a number of TV series during the 1990s. In ‘The Flash’ in 1990, he played a news anchor and reporter and was seen as Inspector William Henderson in ‘Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman’ in 1994. In 1993, he landed his breakthrough role as detective John Munch in ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’, which he portrayed for seven seasons from 1993 to 1999. On the completion of the series, he was cast in ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ from 1999 to 2016. He became so popular as detective John Munch that the character was included in some episodes on seven other series and in one talk show. These series included ‘The X-Files’ on Fox; ‘The Beat’ on UPN; and ‘Law & Order: Trial by Jury’ on NBC. Despite playing the demanding character of detective John Munch, he also appeared in the HBO comedy special ‘Richard Belzer: Another Lone Nut’ in 1997. The following year, he starred in the horror film ‘Species II’, and played himself in the biopic ‘Man on the Moon’ in 1999.
