Robert Slay Obituary, Brunswick Police investigating shooting death
Sophia Aguilar Early on Wednesday morning, a man was shot and murdered inside a home on I Street, according to the Brunswick Police Department.
Just before one in the morning, calls from persons claiming to have heard gunfire prompted police to be dispatched to the 1100 block of I Street. Officers responded and assessed the scene, but at the time, no signs of a shooting were discovered, according to Smith.
Later that morning, about 7 a.m., someone discovered a man inside who was unconscious and called to report a medical emergency at 1105 I Street. Upon their arrival, emergency medical personnel discovered that the man had been shot, according to Smith.
Robert Slay, 35, of Brunswick was the victim.
The investigation, according to Smith, is still ongoing. She urged anyone with information to call the police department’s Silent Witness line at 912-264-1333 or Det. Carla Futch at 912-279-2641.
The violence in Brunswick and Glynn County, according to a woman who observed the investigation from the sidewalk of I Street on Wednesday morning, has been worse recently. The woman asked to remain anonymous.

The 2600 block of Johnston Street was the scene of a drive-by gunshot that left two individuals wounded, one seriously, on June 7. Brunswick Police are still looking into the incident.
Christopher Suttles, 39, was shot and killed early on June 7 in the woods behind a Glynn County apartment complex. Glynn County Police think he was homeless. Police are still looking into the event.
Mykal Ellis, a 16-year-old football player for Brunswick High School, was shot and died on the evening of June 13 in the same neighborhood only a few feet from his home, according to a police report. He was returning home from a friend’s house at the time. The identify of the individual who the Brunswick Police believe killed Mykal was made public last week. Breon Hartley, 21, of Jacksonville, has arrest warrants for murder and other offenses. He hasn’t been detained yet.
Romnel Wilfredo Lopez Alfaro, 38, was discovered dead by Brunswick Police on May 1 in a gray Honda Civic in the 2200 block of Amherst Street. He had been fatally shot. The death is still under investigation by police.

This year’s murder on I Street on Wednesday is the fifth to occur in Brunswick and Glynn County. His name is listed with those of the 53-year-old Dawn Newbauer, Ellis, Suttles, Alfaro, and other murder victims.
On May 21, early in the morning, Newbauer was shot and killed in front of a mall on St. Simons Island. In that situation, Glynn County Police have made an arrest. In the Glynn County Detention Center, 50-year-old Ricky Ricardo Easterling is being held on a murder charge for his suspected involvement in Newbauer’s demise.
