The third season of the slasher TV series Scream is trying to tie itself as close as it can to the original franchise. Aside from the shared name, the show has already made several moves that pay homage to the source material. Roger L. Jackson, who voiced Ghostface in the movies, has been brought back to reprise his role. Additionally, the original mask worn by all of the killers throughout the films is also being resurrected for the first time since the series’ inception.

When the project was first being developed by MTV, showrunners Jill Blotevogel and Jamie Paglia said that they wanted to tell their own story using only the basic building blocks of the flicks that came before. They did this by retiring the iconic mask and instead developed a new disguise for their slashers.

That was their official reasoning, at least, but many believe the real reason was that the network never acquired the rights needed in order to use the mask. As they prepared for the third season though, MTV finally reached a deal with the official licensor of the Ghostface costume and thus were given the opportunity to once again have their murderers don the bone-chilling getup going forward.

These aren’t the only changes being made to the show, though. Scream is switching networks to VH1 this summer and will feature an entirely new cast. Deion Elliot, Mary J. Blige, Keke Palmer, Tyler Posey, Tyga, Giorgia Whigham, Jessica Sula, C.J. Wallace, Giullian Yao Gioiello, Tony Todd, Paris Jackson and more are all set to appear in the reboot with a completely different storyline revolving around a local football star with a traumatic past.

Whether or not this new run is a success remains to be seen. After being stuck in development hell for the past few years though, many fans were excited when the unexpected trailer dropped. Those who fell in love with the first two seasons may be disgruntled that the characters they adored have been scrapped, while others are enthusiastic to have the series venture into a new direction.

VH1 will begin airing two episodes of the new Scream season each night beginning at 9PM Eastern Time on Monday, July 8th and concluding on Wednesday, July 10th.
