Sofia Kenin was born November 14, 1998, in Moscow, Russia, to Alexander and Svetlana Kenin. Her family moved to the United States a few months after she was born. They had previously left the Soviet Union to live in New York City in 1987.

Sofia Kenin is the 2020 WTA Player of the Year. She earned the award by winning the 2020 Australian Open and finishing runner-up at the 2020 French Open.
