Subrata Roy, the visionary Indian businessman, left an enduring legacy on the corporate landscape with the founding of Sahara India Pariwar in 1978.

Sahara India Pariwar, under Roy’s leadership, became a conglomerate operating across diverse sectors.

From the opulent Aamby Valley City to the cinematic ventures of Sahara Movie Studios, and the aviation endeavors of Air Sahara, Roy’s empire extended its reach far and wide.

The group also ventured into sports with the creation of the Uttar Pradesh Wizards and made significant contributions to the entertainment industry through Filmy and other ventures.

Roy’s impact went beyond business accolades. In 2012, India Today recognized him as the tenth-most influential Indian businessman.

Time magazine, in 2004, hailed the Sahara group as “the second-largest employer in India after Indian Railways,” underscoring its extensive workforce of around 1.2 million, spanning salaried employees, consultants, field workers, agents, and business associates.

The Sahara empire operated through a vast network of more than 5,000 establishments across India, showcasing the scale and reach of Roy’s vision.

Notably, the acquisition of iconic properties, including the Grosvenor House Hotel in London in 2010 and the Plaza Hotel and Dream Downtown Hotel in New York City in 2012, added a touch of glamour to Sahara’s portfolio.

Roy’s entrepreneurial spirit remained undiminished over the years. In 2019, he announced Sahara’s foray into the automobile sector with ‘Sahara Evols’.

Roy passed away on November 14, 2023, at the age of 75.
