According to law enforcement records, the alarm was raised on October 19 when Maries County deputies were contacted by detectives from the Phelps County Sheriff’s Office. These detectives had received a tip concerning potential inappropriate contact between a school employee and a student at St. James High School.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the involved staff member is 25-year-old Rikki Laughlin. It was alleged that Laughlin had been sending explicit videos of herself to a 16-year-old student. On October 20, investigators met with the victim in Maries County, where he resides, to gather more information.

The young student disclosed that Laughlin had initiated contact with him via Snapchat. He further stated that Laughlin had kissed him while in a classroom and had attempted to coerce him into a s*xual encounter, inviting him to her residence on October 14.
