Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, better known as Weeknd, was born on February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Ontario.

His parents, Ethiopian immigrants Makkonen Tesfaye and Samrawit Hailu, divorced shortly after he was born.

In Scarborough, he was raised by his mother and grandmother. The Weeknd was raised as an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian. When asked about his religious beliefs in 2020, he told Variety, “I dunno…everything is a test, and if you are religious or spiritual, you have to go through things.”

They also collaborated again in November 2021 on her song ‘La Fama,’ in which they starred in a seriously flirty music video.
